As part of Science Week, the pupils got a taste of university life for a day at the long-standing cooperation partner. Vice-President Prof. Dr Carina Braun gave the new generation some initial insights during the welcome address: ‘Science Week is a good opportunity to showcase the potential of our type of university - because at OTH Regensburg, a university of applied sciences, students not only study with a practical focus, but also complete doctorates and carry out high-level applied research.’ Kathrin Köpf, General Student Advisory Service, and Andrea Stelzl, Head of the Student Lifecycle Centre, presented the extensive range of courses on offer at OTH Regensburg.
Stephan Ligl and Lilly Zirngibl, employees of the university library, provided insights into research in the Regensburg catalogue and databases. Prof. Dr Ludwig Voußem used illustrative examples to explain the basics of scientific work and discussed, among other things, the classification of scientific disciplines into subject groups.
A particular highlight of the day was the visit to the various faculties: Prof Dr Andreas Lesser, himself a former JMF student, offered a guided tour of the mechanical engineering laboratory and students from the Social and Health Sciences student council answered questions about studying and gave a tour of the university. During the concluding lecture by Prof Dr Sabine Jaritz, the path from an initial topic idea to the scientific question and citation method was shown - a valuable preparation for scientific work in the upper school.
The students were impressed by the study programmes and university life at OTH Regensburg. ‘I found the short introduction to business administration and controlling really exciting,’ said one student, who could well imagine choosing this degree programme after graduating from high school. A student interested in science, on the other hand, was particularly enthusiastic about the demonstrations and explanations in the mechanical engineering laboratories. ‘In any case, this visit day at OTH Regensburg gave an important impression of scientific practice and thus underlines the relevance of scientific methods, as they are also to be tested in the Science Week,’ concluded senior school coordinator Andreas Deml, who is responsible for the project at JMF, emphasising the special significance of this school visit to OTH Regensburg.
