Three new Master's degree programmes: OTH Regensburg expands health sector

OTH Regensburg is strengthening its position as the leading healthcare university in Bavaria. The new Master's degree programmes in Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy and Midwifery Science were launched in the summer semester of 2025. This will complete the range of degree programmes in the field of healthcare professions at all academic qualification levels - from Bachelor's to doctorate.

‘We are very pleased that we are the only university in Bavaria to offer a comprehensive range of courses for all healthcare professions and that these new Master's degree programmes now enable students to gain an academic qualification at the highest level,’ explains Prof. Dr Klaudia Winkler, the university management representative for the development focus on healthcare. ‘For almost 15 years, we have been making a significant contribution to the qualification of urgently needed academic specialists and at the same time contributing to the development of young academics for teaching, research and further education.’

With the three new Master's degree programmes, OTH Regensburg now offers a total of 14 healthcare degree programmes, eleven of which are offered at the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences, two at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology) and one at the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics (Medical Informatics). The broad and interdisciplinary programme not only strengthens education, but also research and practice in the healthcare professions.

Ceremonial welcome of the first Master's students in Prüfening

Prof. Dr Nicolas Schöpf, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences, Prof. Dr Klaudia Winkler, the heads of the degree programmes and numerous subject representatives warmly welcomed the 19 new students to Prüfening for the official launch of the new degree programmes. ‘The addition of these three Master's programmes to our range of courses is an important step for our university and for the health sciences as a whole. Our graduates will benefit from a unique environment for research-based nursing, midwifery and therapy sciences,’ said Dean Schöpf.

A particularly unique feature of OTH Regensburg is the close integration of science, practice and interdisciplinary collaboration. ‘We have a huge spectrum. We combine health, technology and computer science in various forms of collaboration,’ said Prof Dr Winkler.

Interdisciplinary teaching, practical research and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment

With the relocation of the laboratory for the physiotherapy and speech therapy departments from Biopark to the Prüfening site, OTH Regensburg is further strengthening its practice-orientated teaching. The laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as video systems, biofeedback technology and digital applications, enables even more intensive scientific and practical training in the fields of physiotherapy and speech therapy. Modern birth simulators are available in the midwifery simulation laboratory to create realistic training conditions.

The new Master's degree programmes not only open up excellent career opportunities for graduates in a rapidly growing market, but also the possibility of a doctorate in the doctoral centre ‘Social and Health Science Design of Transformation Processes’ (PZSGT). OTH Regensburg is thus making a decisive contribution to the further development of the health sciences and to securing highly qualified specialists in Bavaria.

Unique study programmes for the growing healthcare market

With the introduction of these new Master's programmes, OTH Regensburg is sending out a clear signal of its role as a driver of innovation in healthcare education. The university is once again emphasising its claim to actively shape the future of the healthcare professions and to make a sustainable contribution to the academic and scientific development of the sector.

‘The launch of the new Master's programmes is a significant milestone for our faculty and an expression of our strategic development. This programme is unique in Bavaria and perhaps beyond,’ said Dean Schöpf and wished the new Master's students every success.
