The SCALE-UP approach emphasises active, collaborative learning. Instead of traditional frontal lectures, rooms like this one allow students to work together in small groups on projects and problems. The technical equipment is crucial here: interactive displays, mobile whiteboards and flexible furnishings are key elements in supporting innovative learning concepts.
This project was made possible by the funding programme ‘BayernMINT - evaluiert.vernetzt.implementiert’. Prof. Dr Timo Baumann, Prof. Dr Martin Pohl and Prof. Dr Kai Selgrad were in charge of the application in collaboration with the Teaching and Didactics Service Centre.
Combination of high-tech, flexibility and history
Particular attention was paid to preserving the charm and substance of the listed building without sacrificing modern technology. The original wood panelling and colour schemes were respected and skilfully combined with modern furnishings and technology.
The SCALE-UP room in P271 is equipped with four large tables and ergonomic chairs that allow for flexible group organisation. High-resolution displays and a wireless presentation system encourage collaboration between groups. Content can be easily shared between several working groups and worked on together. In addition, all workstations are equipped with sufficient power sockets, HDMI, LAN and USB charging ports.
Special attention is paid to a versatile utilisation concept for the room. The Code Clinic regularly takes place here to provide mutual support for students with questions relating to programming, courses are held, workshops are organised and, last but not least, students are offered an open place to network. The room is therefore open to all interested parties at OTH as part of the teaching programme.
Workshop offer
For all interested lecturers, the workshop ‘From lecture hall to active hall - How innovative room and teaching concepts support student-centred learning’ will take place on 13 March 2025, 10:00 - 14:00 in P271, Prüfeninger Straße under the direction of Prof. Dr. Claudia Schäfle from the TH Rosenheim.
In this workshop, participants will learn about the SCALE-UP concept and possible effects on student learning, experience various collaborative learning activities for themselves and develop possible learning activities for their students based on their learning objectives for direct use in the summer semester 2025. During the workshop, participants will also get an idea of how they can provisionally implement the concept in their courses in a ‘regular’ lecture theatre.
The new SCALE-UP room at OTH Regensburg is an impressive example of how historical buildings and modern educational concepts can be harmoniously combined. With this investment, the university is strengthening its role as a pioneer for forward-looking forms of teaching and learning in the university landscape.
