New part-time degree programmes at OTH Regensburg: Academic qualification in occupational therapy and nursing

OTH Regensburg is expanding its range of health-related study programmes with two innovative, part-time bachelor’s degrees: Evidence Based Practice in Occupational Therapy and Evidence Based Practice in Nursing. These programmes offer professionals the opportunity to further develop their academic competencies and enhance their therapeutic and nursing practice based on the latest research findings.

Internationally, education in health professions has long been delivered at bachelor's level, and Germany is also seeing increasing academic professionalisation in these fields. OTH Regensburg is a pioneer in this area, already offering bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in nursing, midwifery, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. With the addition of two new part-time programmes for experienced nursing professionals with advanced qualifications and for occupational therapists, OTH Regensburg is closing a gap in its academic offering.
“With our part-time degree programme in occupational therapy, we are pioneers in academic continuing education for nursing and therapy professionals. Our goal is to align with international standards and to support career advancement,” says Prof Dr Dorothea Thieme, head of the Evidence Based Practice in Occupational Therapy programme.

Evidence-based knowledge for better patient care

These programmes provide students with the scientific foundations necessary to work evidence-based, tackle complex challenges, and improve the quality of patient care.
“In hospitals, the number of academically trained nursing staff continues to grow. At the same time, there are highly specialised professionals with vocational training and years of practical experience who wish to gain academic qualifications. Our new nursing programme is designed to close exactly this gap,” explains Prof Dr Annette Meussling-Sentpali, head of the Evidence Based Practice in Nursing programme.

In addition to core modules in nursing and therapy sciences, students also take courses on interprofessional collaboration, ethics, digitalisation, and project management. Existing vocational and advanced training can be recognised, allowing students to complete the degree in just six semesters.

Attractive study conditions for working professionals

These degree programmes are specifically designed for working occupational therapists and nurses. Thanks to efficient scheduling with classes on only a few days per week and practice-oriented support, the balance between work and study is made easier.
“Our students benefit from small class sizes, personalised guidance, and experienced lecturers from the field,” emphasises Prof Dr Thieme. The programme can also serve as a springboard to a master’s degree and even a doctorate.
