Nursing studies in transition

Successful exchange at the 4th University Practice Instructors' Day

On 28 March 2025, the 4th University Practice Instructor Day took place at the OTH Regensburg's Prüfening campus. The focus was on the effects of the Nursing Studies Strengthening Act on higher education nursing training and the expansion of international prospects for nursing students.

For the fourth time, representatives of the cooperating healthcare institutions and lecturers from the university met for a constructive exchange within the university nursing training programme at OTH Regensburg. The focus of the day's event was the discussion of the second part of the Nursing Studies Reinforcement Act (PflStudStG) with regard to the practice of extended medical activities.

New requirements due to the Nursing Studies Strengthening Act

The morning presentations by Prof Dr Dorothea Thieme dealt with the issues surrounding the changes that will result for practical university nursing training as a result of the Nursing Studies Strengthening Act with regard to the implementation of nursing studies, admission to examinations and the conduct of state examinations.

The future modules for the acquisition of extended competences for the performance of medical tasks, which will supplement the university nursing degree programme from the winter semester 2025/26, were also discussed and how joint implementation with representatives from practice can succeed.

Prof. Dr Thieme is particularly pleased with the interest shown by the participants: ‘The 4th University Practice Instructors’ Day helped to address and discuss topics relating to the question of additional content in relation to healthcare activities that can be transferred to academic nurses in the future.

The topic of internationalisation and the possibility of internships abroad for nursing students was also the subject of lively discussion. At present, foreign assignments can only be recognised to a limited extent and international cooperation must be further expanded in a targeted manner. ‘For the international discourse, experience in nursing practice outside of Germany is extremely important for our students,’ said Prof Dr Dorothea Thieme.

Practical teaching units and intensive dialogue with cooperation partners

In the afternoon, participants were able to take part in teaching units (TUs) on various topics, giving new cooperation partners the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the documents on theory-practice transfer within practical university nursing training or directly with practical guidance within university nursing training.  A third option was to take part in a course on scientific work and evidence-based nursing.

The event was organised and carried out by Prof. Dr Dorothea Thieme, practice officer on the nursing degree programme, together with practice coordinator Andrea Wallner, lecturer Carolin Pickl and practice supervisor Laura Hausruckinger. ‘A very interesting exchange with important questions from our practice partners on the challenges posed by the new legal situation and restructuring of the nursing degree programme, from which the practice partners and teaching staff at OTH Regensburg were able to benefit,’ said Prof. Thieme.
