Report on the event InnovativeLehre@OTH Regensburg

The regular event InnovativeLehre@OTH Regensburg, a forum for lecturers and interested parties that presents new approaches in university didactics, took place in mid-November 2024. The numerous participants enjoyed an informative and interactive evening both online and in person.

The InnovativeLehre@OTH Regensburg event offered an inspiring insight into current approaches to university didactics and digital tools that improve learning and teaching. After a welcome from the Teaching and Didactics Service Centre, the focus was on a varied programme.

Insights into instructional design and interactive tools

Manuel Glondys, Instructional Designer for the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern (vhb) and the OTH, opened the evening with an overview of his work. He explained the process of course development, compliance with standards and the use of the ELO counselling tool that supports teachers. He emphasised the importance of quality assurance in digital teaching formats and showed how teachers can benefit from this.

This was followed by an interactive activation with the Wooclap platform, in which the participants were able to become active themselves. The tool was presented as an example of how to promote student engagement and participation.

Innovative teaching concepts, augmented reality and Wooclap in the chemistry revision programme

Julia Hartmann and Florian Sattler presented the concept of knowledge nuggets - small, didactically reduced learning units that promote self-directed learning. They showed how text-based content, slides set to music and animated videos enable students to learn at their own pace. An animated short video illustrated how content can be prepared in a didactically and visually appealing way, emphasising the relevance of didactic reduction and the coordination of content and presentation form. However, it was noted that such reduced learning units are not suitable for every learning content.

Florian Weininger presented the project ‘CyberCraft Archive - See. Design. Master.’, Florian Weininger presented the use of augmented reality. He presented the use of augmented reality technologies, such as the Microsoft Hololens, which will soon be replaced by the Meta Quest 3. Applications such as Rhino and Grasshopper enable the creation of customised content in almost all areas of engineering, architecture and design. A particular highlight was the presentation of the ‘HoloBrick’ project, in which AR was used to support the artistic design of a wall on the architecture building at OTH. Weininger also drew attention to the CyberCraft Kolleg's participation in the upcoming ‘Zukunft Handwerk 2025’ trade fair and gave a fitting motivation with the slogan ‘Be Cybercrafter!’.

In the last presentation, Dr Eva-Christina Rosenhammer and Ben Selent showed how Wooclap is used in chemistry to bring students from different degree programmes up to a uniform level of knowledge in the first semesters. Wooclap can be used as an audience response system, but can also be used to create learning units for independent revision of the subject matter. Interactive exercises promote motivation and understanding and complement traditional lectures. The positive feedback from the audience confirmed the great interest in such digital revision programmes.

The event offered a successful mix of practical examples, interactive tools and innovative teaching methods. It impressively demonstrated how digital technologies can enrich university life and support teachers and students.
