2016 | Optimizing Energy and Resources: A Corporate Perspective

Simultaneously Reducing Operating Costs and Environmental Impact: Over 60 participants responded to the joint invitation extended by IHK, OTH, and ZMS to Schwandorf. The half-day event facilitated an exchange of experiences focused on cost-saving strategies within companies.

Scarce resources and high energy consumption pose significant cost burdens and challenges for businesses. To counteract this, there's a growing need to leverage effective instruments for sustainable cost reduction. The Regensburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), in collaboration with Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) and Zweckverband Müllverwertung Schwandorf (ZMS), organized a joint event themed 'Energy and Resources in Companies.' The overwhelming response was evident as over 60 participants embraced the invitation, engaging in the informative half-day session.

Thomas Knoll, Director of the Schwandorf Waste Recycling Association (ZMS), along with his deputy Franz Grabinger, inaugurated the event with a tour of the waste-to-energy plant, receiving positive feedback from attendees.

Thomas Knoll delivered a welcome address highlighting the utilization of energy from waste. Following presentations by Werner Beck, focusing on IHK and OTH services in energy and resources, and Dr. Michael Riederer, from the Regensburg Center of Energy and Resources (RCER), diverse expert talks ensued. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Brückl emphasized the significance of supply quality for companies' competitiveness in the evolving electricity grid, elucidating the implications and opportunities of the energy transition. Marco Taschek elaborated on the benefits of combined heat and power generation for industries, while Prof. Dr. Sonja Haug addressed potential conflicts between ecological, economic, and social goals, offering potential solutions.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. discussed ways to generate waste heat when its prevention isn't feasible. The event concluded with presentations by Prof. Dr. Markus Bresinsky and Prof. Dr. Mario Mocker, emphasizing the impact of people and technology on resource supply security and risk, alongside the requisites and availability of technological raw materials.

Participants departed with a wealth of insights on aligning cost reduction and environmental impact strategies. The experts recommended tailored implementation of these strategies in individual companies for optimal results.
