Applying to the Master's degree programme in Electrical and Microsystems Engineering (MEM)
A sufficient number of participants is a prerequisite for the start of this study programme.
The standard period of study for full-time students is 3 semesters. It is possible to complete the programme as a dual study programme.
Important information!
Since the winter semester 2024/2025, OTH Regensburg is charging service fees for students from non-EU countries who enrol in English-language degree programmes. The fees will be used to expand the services necessary for the support and integration of international students at OTH Regensburg. Please take note of the following important information and instructions.
1. Admission requirements
- Applicants should hold a first university degree in a relevant programme with at least six semesters of study, in the natural sciences (physics, chemistry) or technical field (electrical engineering, mechatronics, renewable energy technology and energy efficiency, intelligent systems engineering, microsystems technology, environmental and industrial sensor technology) or hold an equivalent German or international degree in which they will generally have been awarded 210 ECTS credits but not less than 180 credits. If the final degree certificate was not yet received at the time of the application, a provisional degree certificate can be submitted.
- Candidates who completed their first degree outside of Germany must submit a VPD evaluation report from Uni-Assist. The Master commission decides on the relevance and/or equivalence of the degree and the equivalence of degrees obtained at universities outside of Germany in accordance with Art. 86 BayHIG.
- Proof of the special qualification by an overall examination grade of "good" (2,5) or better in the degree listed under 1.1. Alternatively, the requirement is also fulfilled by proof that the final grade submitted in the first degree program falls into the group of the best 51 % in the percentage ranking of overall examination grades in the degree program at the respective university. Please be aware that letters written by professors or lecturers regarding performance in single classes will not be considered. The certificate confirming the applicant’s completion of their first degree programme among the top 51 % will have to be issued by a central university administration unit and must outline the total size of the respective cohort.
- Candidates who completed their first degree with less than 210 ECTS Credits, will be required to complete additional courses during the first two semesters of study. Four-year degrees from abroad are normally considered equivalent to 210 ECTS credits.
- Proof of sufficient practical experience. Proof of this is provided by a practical semester of study completed as part of the first degree or by a comparable continuous practical activity of at least 18 weeks. Internship confirmations must include the following information: name and contact details of the internship provider or employer, start date and end date of the internship or work activity, main tasks or responsibilities.
- Applicants who obtained their university entrance qualification abroad are required to submit proof of sufficient German language proficiency (DSH-1 or similar) or alternatively, proof of English language proficiency on the CEFR level B2. For more details, please check point 3.1 below.
- Proof of programme-specific aptitude (aptitude test as per 2.2).
2. Admission process
2.1 application
All applications must be submitted electronically through the OTH application portal.
Application deadlines:
1 May – 31 May (start of studies 1 October)
15 November – 15 December (start of studies 15 March)
Applications received after the deadline cannot be considered. Please note that the programme does not support late arrival. Candidates will be asked to arrive in Regensburg before the start of the semester.
2.2 aptitude test
To demonstrate their aptitude for studying the programme, candidates will be asked to take part in a written test which will take place online, off-campus and without supervision. They will be asked to solve an exam task which will be sent to them in advance and asked to submit it back in electronic format before a deadline. Only candidates who have submitted their application in due time and form (application status "Valid") will be considered for the aptitude test. Please note that receiving an invitation to the aptitude test does not necessarily mean that all admission requirements have been fulfilled. Due to time constraints, your application may be evaluated in full only after the aptitude test has been completed. It is therefore possible that you may still face rejection despite passing the aptitude test.
The aptitude test will take place on 19 December 2024.
You will receive specific instructions for the test by e-mail after the end of the application period, so please check your e-mail account regularly on or before 17 December 2024 (including the SPAM folder!). Please note that you are required to take the test at the exact same time as the other candidates. It is not possible to take the test at an earlier or later time, regardless of any personal circumstances.
During the test, applicants must prove the existence of the necessary basic knowledge in the subject area, especially in the following three fields:
- Mathematics
- Basics of electronics, physics and chemistry
- Electronic components, their function, manufacturing processes and applications
Based on the results of the written test and the application documents, we will conduct a differentiated assesment with points, which will be added into a total score:
- The overall grade of the first degree (on a German grading scale of 1,0 to 2,5 as confirmed in the VPD) will be converted into P points based on the formula P = 150 – (60 x grade). Grades below 2,5 will be converted into P=0 points.
- The written test will be graded on a scale of 0 to100 points.
Applicants who have obtained a total score of at least 65 points have fulfilled the qualification requirement listed under 1.7. Candidates who do not pass the aptitude test may re-take it one more time, as part of a future application process
Applicants who have completed their first degree programme “with distinction” (1.0-1.2 in the German grading system) or who can show they are among the top 10 % of graduates from that programme can apply for exemption from the aptitude test by submitting a request for exemption with their application documents before the application deadline. Please be aware that letters written by professors or lecturers regarding performance in single classes will not be considered. The certificate confirming the applicant’s completion of their first degree programme among the top 10 % cent will have to be issued by a central university administration unit and must outline the total size of the respective cohort.
